Mrs. Truus Schröder-Schrader 2 11 September 1980 The exhibition will include paintings, drawings, typography, architectural drawings, scale models and reconstructions of a number of environments designed by De Stijl artists. A full-scale segment of Mondrian's 1926 Parie atelier, elements of van Doesburg's 1928 Cafe Aubette and new maquettes of the Rietveld house and other projects by van Eesteren, van Doesburg and Huszar are planned. Documentary phogotraphs, "unreal-ized" architectural projects, interpretive material in the form of didactic panels with time lines, contemporary catalogues and books, and specially prepared slide-tapes and films will be included. Pre-De Stijl material, that clarifies its beginnings in relation to Berlage and Frank Lloyd Wright, will be shown. De Stijl's relation-ship to contemporary European movements such as Dada and various manifestations of the Bauhaus will be illustrated. The exhibition's tour will be limited to three museums because we recognize that works of such significance cannot circulate more extensively. All borrowed objects will be under constant review by conservators; overseas shipments will be accompanied by couriers responsible for overseeing handling and unpacking. Opening in winter of 1982 at Walker Art Center, the De Stijl exhibition will be shown at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D. C. in the spring. In the late summer it will go to Holland — where it will be divided between the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam and the Kroller-Muller Museum, Otterlo. The De Stijl exhibition will be the featured international museum event of 1982 in Holland. It will be presented as part of the observance of America's 200-year diplomatic ties with Holland. Walker Art Center, the organizing institution for this exhibition, would appreciate the privilege of showing three photographs from your collection. The overall selection of works has been undertaken in consultation with scholars in the U.S., Canada and Holland. Our list has been carefully refined to reflect only key examples by each artist. By means of such outstanding works, we plan to show the evolution and range of this decisive movement which has become such a vital manifes-tation of recent art history. We hope you will lend your photographs for inclusion in this definitive exhibition. All works will, of course, be fully insured from initial pickup to return. I am taking the liberty of enclosing a loan förm and would be delighted to discuss any aspect of our request. All works will be illustrated and documented in the catalogue, which will contain a Dutch language version of the essays. We look forward to your participation in this definitive exhibition of one of the most important movements in the history of modernism. Director sy
