University of Louisville Louisville 8,Kentucky ALLEN R. HITE ART INSTITUTE March 23, 1959 Dear Mevrouw Schröder, Thanks for your nice long letter; it inspired me to write the enclosed piece. Several months ago the railroad magazine, TUSSEN DE RAILS asked mé to write an article about my "impressions of Utrecht". I wanted to write the thing, but I could not bring myself to the point of actually doing it. Your comments about the Utrecht SINGELS inspired me to do the article; and I enclosed it because I thought that you may be interested in it. I am glad that you sent the copy of Rietveld's notes to the German historian; such things are very xia useful for me. His latest work Set sounds so exciting and so much. Yes, I must return to^it and you people and "Holland. Barb and I feel so homesick for our adopted country now that Spring is coming/ Louisville is such an extremely dirty and ugly city.' It's unbearable. The city and local country is like some of the worst parts of Belgium. Far outside the city, however, there are many beautiful places; the State (Provincie) of Kentucky is, in general, very fine. But we must live painful ugliness, because that is where all the A activity is. I am curious to know what you think of my little article. Should we fight about it?.
