Rietveld's design for the red and blue armchair was revolutionary because it broke with all traditional notions of a chair. It is a piece of furniture that leaves the space around it intact. The primary colours, red, blue and yellow, plus black accentuate the slats and thus the space between them. Following the death of Rietveld's client and co-designer Truus Schröder, Centraal Museum took over the management of her Rietveld house and most of its contents, including this red and blue chair.
