Moesman portrayed himself as a reflection in the woman’s breast. The painting refers to Jan van Eyks Arnolfini Portrait, an engagement portrait. Moesman’s Self-portrait is a harsh version of that painting. The painter had planned to get engaged to a girl named Lenie, but her parents opposed. Lenie urged Moesman to create a painting telling their story of impossible love. Moesman was inspired by a death scene from a then well-known play on this subject. When Lenie broke off the engagement, Moesman altered the painting: the upper thigh was covered by a dull brown skirt with a poppy flower sticking out, the flesh of her face partially stripped, and the metal breast was added.
