In the late Middle Ages, the Virgin Mary became the most important Catholic saint after her son Jesus. She is frequently depicted as his mother. Invariably, her cloak is as blue as the sky: an ultramarine colour, using the most expensive pigment made from the semi-precious stone lapis lazuli from Afghanistan. In his Lamentation, Jan van Scorel has used ultramarine for Mary's cloak, on a pink ground: a use of colour he may have taken from the painter Raphael in Rome. Symbolizing Mary's otherworldly purity, blue for clothing remains popular and is now the most commonly worn colour worldwide. [text 2023]
