The Smeetoren (Blacksmith’s Tower) on the left was one of the oldest defensive towers in Utrecht, erected in 1145. From 1304, it was used as a guardroom by the blacksmith’s guild. After 1552, it was used to store the city’s supply of gunpowder and in 1642 an observatory<BR>was installed at the top of the tower. The tower was demolished in 1855.
