Snowwhite and the next generation

Snowwhite and the next generation

The 'new generation' of onlookers spying on and judging Snow White's body bear little resemblance to the benign dwarves of the Grimm brothers' fairy tale. With this painting, Marlene Dumas criticises the frequent use of female nudity by European and American male artists. Museums and art history books are rife with seductive naked women. Work by women who make art is conspicuously rare. [text 2023]

Marlene Dumas
