De luitspeler

De luitspeler

The theme of the musician painted full screen in half-length enjoyed great popularity from the early 1620s. Baburen was one of the first to bring this theme from Italy to the North. The subject was not only popular in Utrecht, but quickly spread to Haarlem and Leiden as well. For example, Frans Hals painted his famous Lute-playing jester around 1623.
