Art on the station square: Maarten Baas
A four meter high clay chair.

Clay
Maarten Baas (1978) is the designer of this giant red chair in the station square. He made more objects and furniture out of clay. The chair is part of this Clay series.
Baas makes the Clay Works from synthetic clay. He sculpts the clay around a metal 'skeleton'. Just like humans, the skeleton provides strength. Take a closer look at the chair. Do you see the fingerprints?
There are also Clay cabinets, fans, tables and lamps. All shaped by hand and made without molds. Each piece of furniture in the Clay series is unique, there is no second of them.

About Maarten Baas
Maarten Baas studied at the Design Academy in Eindhoven. He is known for his rebellious, intellectual and artistic designs. Time, imperfection, humour and the social role of designers play a major role in his work. The Centraal Museum Utrecht has been collecting and exhibiting Maarten Baas chairs for years. Another example is the 'Smoke' Red Blue Chair. Baas burned a red and blue Rietveld chair. He shows the beauty of the imperfect with it. And at the same time, it does away with the strict frameworks of the design world.
