In 1957, Lambertus van Baaren bought this subdued landscape produced in the period when Piet Mondrian lived in Amsterdam. The young Mondrian and Simon Maris set out to draw and paint along the Gein, a small river near Abcoude. Maris depicted his colleague there, painting on a stationary bicycle with the easel on its handlebars. In many of Mondrian's early landscapes, the dark silhouettes of trees stand out against a clear evening sky. [text 2023]
