Nobody gives a shit about Rietveld in Mali
Victor Sonna worked with a group of women in Mali to create this work. The cloth is made of reed, woven in a zigzag pattern as a reference to Rietveld’s Zig-Zag Chair. With this work, Sonna aims to show that icons are rooted in a certain place. Rietveld is not well known in Mali, where a ‘rietveld’ means ‘a field of reed’. But the title also carries another meaning: when Sonna was in Mali, fields of reed were on fire and there were no resources available to fight those fires. But here in the west, no one seems concerned about the ecological disasters taking place in Mali: Nobody gives a shit about rietveld in Mali.
