Adieu l'enfance - HOLY 2 - 13
Sonna comes from a strict Catholic family. While Catholicism remains part of his identity, religion has acquired a different meaning over the course of his life. For this work he bought religious figurines from churches that were about to be repurposed. He felt it would be a pity for these figures to disappear, and so decided to give them a second life. Yet their original religious significance continues to shine through. The new object has an alienating effect, but also invites closer inspection. Using discarded materials comes naturally to Sonna: in Cameroon, reusing materials is often a necessity. As such, this work is also a commentary on consumerism and the perpetual production of new things.[text 2023]
