"The addiction of constantly escaping reality by digital entertainment is something that is a big part of everybody's world today", is how Iris van Herpen describes her inspiration for her 2011 Escapism collection. Craftsmanship and innovation come together in futuristic designs such as this dress. With her research into the ‘handicrafts’ of the future, Van Herpen steers fashion in a new direction. For her Escapism collection, she had metal wire woven into silk. The resulting material can be modelled sculpturally, in this case producing something reminiscent of coral. [text 2023]
Modeontwerper Iris van Herpen start in 2007 haar gelijknamige modehuis. Ze maakt een onwisbare indruk door de combinatie van schijnbare tegenstellingen: traditioneel vakmanschap met innovatie en eeuwenoude mythologie met het virtueel metaversum. In 2011 organiseert het Centraal Museum haar eerste solotentoonstelling: Het nieuwe ambacht: Iris van Herpen en haar inspiratie. Ook koopt het museum verschillende werken aan, en geeft een opdracht voor een 3D geprinte top.
