At the end of the 19th century, many of Utrecht’s residents still bought their daily groceries at the market. To improve hygienic conditions, in 1894 a large new fruit hall was built on Vredenburg. The produce could be easily delivered by boat via the canal. The impressive hall with its industrial architecture was a symbol of the changing city. The hall was demolished in 1919 for the construction of the Jaarbeurs.
