Zig-Zag Chair designed by Gerrit Rietveld in 1934 and reproduced using 45,910 year-old swamp Kauri wood in 2015
Simon Starling, 2015
Although this chair by Simon Starling was made in 2015, it can also be seen as the oldest chair in Centraal Museum’s collection. It is made of almost 50,000-year-old wood from a swamp in New Zealand, where pre-Ice Age wood has been preserved underground. Starling likes to play with time. By combining ancient wood with a more than 85-year-old chair, the artist fuses together different layers of time. [text]
