Over de tentoonstelling
Honthorst kreeg als een van de weinige niet-Italianen prestigieuze opdrachten voor altaarstukken en wist invloedrijke kunstverzamelaars aan zich te binden. Na zijn terugkeer in 1620 richtte hij zich op levendige genrestukken en musicerende gezelschappen. Hij vervolmaakte het pastorale genre en het portrait historié, en legde zich in de jaren daarna steeds meer toe op het portretschilderen. Hij begreep als geen ander wat zijn opdrachtgevers van hem verwachtten en paste zijn stijl bijna intuïtief aan. Hierdoor kreeg hij belangrijke opdrachten van koninklijke en adellijke families en in heel Europa. Honthorst wordt gerekend tot de meest succesvolle kunstenaars in het bruisende kunstklimaat van de zeventiende eeuw, een periode die wordt bepaald door de bloeiperiode van de Hollandse schilderschool van Rembrandt, Frans Hals en Johannes Vermeer. Hoewel hij in zijn eigen tijd succesvoller was dan tijdgenoten, wordt hij vandaag de dag overschaduwd door zijn beroemde tijdgenoten.
In Utrecht, de stad waar hij is geboren, getrouwd en stierf, krijgt Honthorst eindelijk een podium. Het Centraal Museum doet dat dat met het tonen van zo’n 60 schilderijen en circa 30 tekeningen van Honthorst uit museale en particuliere collecties uit Europa en de VS, zoals Musée du Louvre, de Britse Royal Collection en Galleria Borghese.
Te zien in De Stallen
Gerard van Honthorst - in alles anders dan Rembrandt is te zien in De Stallen. Deze tentoonstellingsruimte bevindt zich in de oude stallen van het voormalige Agnietenklooster. Twee keer per jaar is hier een grootschalige, onderwerpgebonden tentoonstelling te zien, met focus op een van onze deelcollecties: oude, moderne en hedendaagse kunst, design, mode of stadsgeschiedenis. De Stallen is de grootste tentoonstellingsruimte van het museum.
