Rietveld Oudegracht 55 Utrecht, Holland Dear Mr. Rietveld: Many thanks for your very interesting letter. I needed this Information for a book 1 have written on Marcel Breuer in which I refer in detail to "de Stijl" influence upon the Bauhaus. Since some of Breuer's early furniture of 1920 to 1923 is very similar in character to your furniture, I reproduced a photograph of your 1917 armchair in the book. I tried to get the date from back copies of "De Stijl" and the nearest I could come to it was 1918. That still makes it four years earlier than Breuer's wood furniture, so that I think there is no question about precedence. The book is now being printed but it is too late to change the date from 1918 to 1917. I will send you a copy of the book as soon as it appears. Meanwhile, thank you very much for your detailed reply. We are still very much interested in seeing any architectural work you may be doing at present. Department of Architecture and Design PB/gm
