Even though there were still cargo boats on the Oudegracht at the beginning of the 20th century, the canal had long since lost its significance as a city port. With the construction of the Merwede Canal in 1892, Utrecht got a new modern harbour for large ships. The new industries that established themselves along it lay far outside the old city centre.
