Maarten Baas: Clay chair

Maarten Baas (1978) is the designer of this giant red chair. He made more objects and furniture from clay. The chair is part of this Clay series. There are also Clay cabinets, fans, tables and lamps. All hand formed and made without molds. Every piece of furniture from the Clay series is unique. Baas makes the Clay works from synthetic clay. He molds the clay around a metal 'skeleton'. Just like in humans, the skeleton provides strength. Take a closer look at the chair. Do you see the fingerprints?

Maarten Baas studied at the Design Academy in Eindhoven. He is known for his rebellious, intellectual and artistic designs. Time, imperfection, humour and the social role of designers are important themes in his work. The Centraal Museum has been collecting and exhibiting his designs for years.
