In the area of Utrecht production of ceramics dates back for centuries: from roof and floor tiles, to decorative pottery. This floor is made from baked red-clay tiles, decorated with various colours of glazing. The different tiles together create clever geometric figures. The large centre tiles are decorated with deer and dragons, while the smaller ones depict eagles, rosettes, and French lilies.
Discovered in the garden of Janskerkhof 16, the floor was most likely part of the hall in a large stone house with turrets, which had stood on that spot.
