This bronze coloured men's coat in tufted velvet is an exceptionally fine example. At the end of the eighteenth century most men’s jackets were made of silk and were lavishly embroidered. This velvet example is nevertheless no less luxurious and of good quality than the more usual men's jackets at the time.Lady de Jonge gratefully accepted a gift of men's clothing in 1945 which included this coat: "this is certainly a very important donation to be able to add to the museum's collection, not only because of the scarcity gentlemen's clothing, but to teach us about the fabrics used."
