Nicolaas Beets (1814-1903) can be considered as one of the rare and outspoken abolitionists within the Netherlands. Based in Utrecht, he was a minister, theologian, a writer, poet, and a professor. In 1864 he was asked to work in Utrecht as a pastor, where he also started working for the university as a professor in Church History. He resided at Boothstraat 6, from which the facade up to this day has a memorial stone commemorating its historical resident.
