The villages around the city had no defences of their own and were therefore extremely vulnerable to attack. The residents of the ‘stadsvrijheid’ were allowed to seek refuge behind the city walls when in danger. This probably also applied to residents of more remote villages, although it would not have been easy to leave the house unattended. Here Droochsloot shows the misery that could befall the unprotected villagers.
