During the many plague epidemics that ravaged Utrecht between 1350 and 1666, the faithful prayed for help to Mary and to several ‘plague saints’: mostly St Sebastian of Rome (left, pierced with arrows) and St Roch of Montpellier, who can be recognised by the plague ulcer on his leg.
