Toile de jouy spijkerbroek
The classic, eighteenth century Toile de Jouy-print is still a source of inspiration in 2017: G-Star co-owner Pharell Williams chose this design as one of the prints for Elwood X25. The Elwood is the famous '3D' jeans model with knee patches and cut-off trouser legs. X25 refers to the 25 different designs in this collection. These men's jeans have the white background and pattern of narrative scenes characteristic of Toile de Jouy. The images are easy to recognise: it is probably no coincidence that the choice of design is a stylistic reproduction of Les Travaux de la Manufacture by Jean-Baptiste Huet (1745-1811) in 1783-84. Les Travaux accurately portrays the whole production process of Toile de Jouy, from the mixing of colours and the copper plate printing to how the material is dried. Huet himself is also portrayed, sketching outdoors, entirely true to the ideas of the Enlightenment.
