Walking With Chairs New York
In 2010, and at the invitation of artist residency Het vijfde seizoen, Ienke Kastelein organised a performance in a psychiatric institution in Den Dolder titled IK zit hier (‘I sit here’).
For the performance she used the white plastic chair: easy to use and available everywhere. For that reason, the chair is able to represent every ‘I’ that takes a seat on it. The chair again features in Kastelein’s work in 2014. Together with her partner, she traversed New York carrying a white chair on her back, looking for a suitable place to sit. She then invited people to take a seat on the chair and to have a conversation. [text 2023]- Maker
