Eyes, a nose and a mouth are hidden inside this large, soft, body-engulfing ball of wool. The rather sinister appearance was inspired by the self-portrait in the trilogies of the British artist Francis Bacon. The starting point for fashion designer Helen Price was the answer to the question: "what would have happened if Francis Bacon and the American film director Tim Burton met?" The heavy, deep-pile, knitted mass was created with a three dimensional machine technique, which is not normally suited to making fashion. Working with knitwear appeals to Price because its versatility enables her to work freely and creatively with colour, texture and shape. It is therefore no surprise that she applies this three dimensional technique in order to achieve an expressionistic and surrealistic style: not by using blobs of paint but by manipulating scissors and knives. The design is an illustration of how the 'wearability' of fashion may recede into the background and of how it fuses with other disciplines.
