Sometimes you first need to destroy something in order to let something new emerge. In his Smoke series, Maarten Baas does so almost literally by burning existing and often iconic furniture pieces. Through the unexpected and sometimes asymmetrical forms that result, Baas explores notions of beauty, perfection and transformation. By treating the charred object with super-strong epoxy resin, the chair can be used again. [text 2023]

Het stuk is geïnspireerd op de rood-blauwe stoel van Rietveld. De ontwerper wil in het project ‘Smoke’ de waardering ter discussie stellen die wij aan een volmaakte, perfecte uitvoering van objecten hechten in tegenstelling tot de liefde voor ‘ongerepte natuur’ waar aantasting en verval een wezenlijk bestanddeel van zijn. Om die reden heeft hij iconen uit de 20ste eeuwse designgeschiedenis met een verfafbrander bewerkt. Het project is tot stand gekomen in samenwerking met de Amerikaanse galerie Moss. Ter gelegenheid van de tentoonstelling Rietvelds Universum heeft het Centraal Museum gevraagd of een tweede exemplaar kon worden geproduceerd. De eigenaar van het tot dan toe enige exemplaar heeft daarvoor toestemming verleend op grond van de unieke positie die de Rietveldcollectie van het Centraal Museum in de wereld heeft. Maarten Baas hoort bij de jongere lichting Nederlandse ontwerpers voor wie het conceptuele aspect in de vormgeving centraal staat. Het Centraal Museum heeft deze stroming, opgekomen in het begin van de jaren ’90 van de vorige eeuw, vanaf het begin verzameld, o.a. door regelmatig aankopen van het Nederlandse ‘merk’ Droog Design te doen. Van deze tweede ‘verbranding’ is een film gemaakt door de cineast Rob Hodselmans die ook door het museum is aangekocht.
