The starting point for this design was
the seventeenth-century landscaped
gardens of Oranienbaum Palace in Germany. During a visit to the
palace and gardens, Bey was fascinated by the contrast between nature
and culture. His eye was caught by
the fallen tree trunks lying around,
which could function as ready-made
benches. Bey found chair backs in
second-hand shops that reminded
him of the style of the palace and
had them cast in bronze. He did not
supply the tree trunk with the chair
backs. The idea is that they can be
fixed to any tree trunk. No carpentry
is required: the natural material can
be used directly as the base for the
design.
