Rietveld referred to the zigzag chair as “… just a shot into space … It is not a chair, but some constructional fun … the zigzag.” The zigzag chair is one of the many cantilever chairs from the second half of the 1920s. It is also one of Rietveld’s attempts at designing a chair produced from one single sheet of material. Inspiration for the shape was most likely taken from the German Rasch brothers, who were the first to publish this model in 1926. Rietveld worked at this design for a long time. It seemed the actual construction with tubular steel was not strong enough.
