Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder (1573-1621) had three sons who adopted his specialisation of painting still lifes. Ambrosius Bosschaert the Younger was more influenced by his father's work than his two brothers, and this is especially evident in his early paintings. This still life is a good example of his later, graceful work, in which he often depicted flowers with curly petals, such as tulips and snake’s head fritillary. The fly, here on the table, is a common feature of his paintings.
This artwork belongs to the Netherlands Art Property Collection (NK Collection). The NK Collection consists of art objects that were retrieved from Germany by the Allies after World War II and subsequently came under the guardianship of the Dutch State. The collection contains objects that may have been looted, confiscated or forcibly sold between 1933 and 1945. More information can be found at wo2.collectienederland.nl. - Volgens O. ter Kuile is het schilderij pas in 1947 gerecupereerd. Dit moet op een vergissing berusten, aangezien het schilderij al in Den Haag [1946] (met onjuiste afmetingen) wordt vermeld. Zie Den Haag 1985(b), cat. nr. vi-14, p. 90 en Den Haag [1946], p. 8.
