Proverbs were a favourite motif for seventeenth-century illustrators. In this painting, the young girl shows her mother ‘the rotten apple that spoils all the rest’ (‘een rotte appel in de mand, maakt al het gave fruit te schand’), which informs us that evil is infectious, and that good morals can be corrupted by bad company. The poet and moralist Jacob Cats describes this proverb in his book Spiegel van den ouden ende nieuwen tijd (i.e. ‘Mirror of the old and new times’; 1632), specifically reminding parents that a child’s tender soul is very susceptible to bad influences.

Remarks
Afkomstig van de familie Martens van Sevenhoven. Het schilderij fungeerde in het huis van de familie Martens op Janskerkhof 16 te Utrecht als schoorsteenstuk. Het verbeeldt het oude spreekwoord "Een rotte appel in de mand, maakt al het gave fruit te schand'. Volgens Lowenthal een kopie (verdere gegevens onbekend) in Pfügfelder, Essen, Essener Credit Anstalt (1904) en een repliek of kopie op doek, 113,1 x 154 cm, in de collectie E. Beit von Speyer, Frankfurt am Main (1925?). Zie Lowenthal 1986, cat.nr. C-53, p. 169 en pp. 219-220.
