The three vault bosses decorated the vault of the Domkerk cathedral library. They show three of the four Church Fathers, whose writings constituted the foundation for the teachings of the Christian Church. The fourth, St Ambrose, is missing. Following tradition, St Jerome is represented in a cardinal’s hat and cloak; his attribute is the lion. St Augustine, the bishop of Hippo, can be recognized by his bishop’s mitre and staff; in his right hand he holds his attribute, the heart. St Gregory is identified by the papal tiara on his head.
