When there was a fire or other threat to the city, a guard blew a horn or used rattles to warn the population. This bugle was used until 1652 in the Utrecht suburb of Bemuurde Weerd. It bears the coat of arms of the Bemuurde Weerd, with two geese facing each other.The fire wardens who lived in the Buurtoren until the early 20th century had a similar horn at their disposal.
