Although the signature and date are original, the attribution of this painting to Ter Brugghen is not generally accepted. However, if it is painted by him, The repentant Peter is his earliest surviving painting.

Remarks

Volgens Nicolson betreft het hier een kopie naar een verloren gegaan schilderij. Zie Nicolson 1958, cat. nr. D 90, pp. 116-117, Nicolson 1960 (c), p. 470 (noot 24), en Nicolson 1973, p. 237. De toeschrijving wordt eveneens betwist door Blanckert in Utrecht / Braunschweig 1986-1987, p. 39 (noot 9), en Slatkes. Zie Slatkes 1981-1982, p. 183 en Slatkes 1988, p. 80. Volgens Van Thiel betreft het een origineel dat gedateerd moet worden tussen 1618 en 1620. Zie Van Thiel 1971, pp. 105-107, en van Thiel 1988. Ook Schnakenburg 1987, pp. 173-174 is ervan overtuigd dat het om een origineel werk gaat. Het schilderij is grotendeels overschilderd. Een andere versie op doek, 70 x 91 cm, bevond zich in de kunsthandel. Zie Parijs 1992 (a), cat. nr. 7, pp. 28-32.
