The period is characterized by strong contrast between light and dark; massive, three-dimensional forms and sombre, unbroken colours. For aesthetic reasons, a strip of about thirty centimetres (about one foot) was added to the top at a later date.</span><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Arial, sans-serif;">Lazarus suffered from leprosy, a disease that was seen in the Middle Ages and long after as a punishment from God. For this reason and out of fear of infection, people with leprosy were exciled from the cities.</span></p>

Aan de bovenzijde van het doek is over de gehele breedte een strook van ca. 30 cm aangezet. Een tweede versie, doek, ca. 136.7 x 207.5 cm, door H. ter Brugghen en werkplaats, bevindt zich in Bordeaux, Eglise Saint-Ferdinand. Zie Curie en Maisonnave 1997. Een kopie, paneel, 127 x 157 cm, werd aangeboden op de Veiling Fraenzl, Wenen 08-04-1919, cat. nr. 6, met afb. (als Joachim Beuckelaer). Zie Nicolson 1958, cat. nr. A 70, p. 101. Eigendom van G. Otlet in Alicante (1921) blijkt uit het opschrift op de achterzijde van een foto van het schilderij in Kassel, Schloss Wilhelmshöhe. Hier wordt een briefwisseling d.d. 12-08-1921, 21-08-1921 en 29-08-1921 vermeld tussen Otlet en de directeur van Schloss Wilhelmshöhe. Schriftelijke mededeling van G.J.M. Weber aan M.J.
