Fashion duo Michiel van Keuper (1970) and Francisco van Benthum’s (1972) colourful and often absurd designs were iconic in Dutch fashion around the millennium. Their much talked about collections were a reaction to classical couture and were given surreal names such as Fleurs du Mal/Evil Wrapped in Beauty or Farm. Keupr/vanBentm won various prizes and showed in Paris. One of their most well known designs, a pink men’s coat with a horse’s head, is also in the Centraal Museum’s collection. We were lucky enough to acquire a few more garments in 2016, including this spectacular black and yellow men’s outfit. The wide pleats, the use of colour, the contrasting materials and the layered trousers are distinctive details.
