The Utrecht born Cornelis van Swanenburgh painted entirely in the manner of the Italianate painter Jan Both. The composition of the landscape, the drawing of the figures and even the details in this painting remember strongly at his work. An archive document demonstrates that he was an acquaintance of Dirk Both, the father of Jan and his elderly brother Andries Both. Only a handful of paintings by his hand are known.
