The French fashion designer Jeanne Margaine-Lacroix was already renowned for her innovative designs in 1899. Her use of stretch silk jersey combined with the minimum of stays caused the usually worn corset to be almost unnecessary. Her dresses even triggered an international scandal in 1908; they didn't leave enough to the imagination. This salmon-pink design with silver lame decoration is from a later date but also shows the inventiveness of the designer: four small weights are attached to the inner bodice of the dress to ensure that the material hangs correctly. Margaine-Lacroix in Paris was housed at 19 Boulevard Haussmann from 1899-1923 and moved to the Avenue de Marginy until 1928, which is the address printed on the dress label. Margaine-Lacroix' designs were also sold in The Netherlands; her name appears in 1927 on the announcements for the "fashion revue of the season" in the Burger Schouwburg in Tilburg, where "23 1st class Paris fashion houses will demonstrate the VERY NEWEST Nouveautes, as if one was actually present at one of the top fashion houses in Paris."
