The subject of this portrait, Anton Kannemeyer, was influential upon Ina van Zyl as a teacher during her time at the South African University of Stellenbosch. The cartoonist was critical of the apartheid regime and campaigned for its abolition. Yet he was called out later in life for his stereotypical depiction of Black people. Van Zyl creates work on ambivalent subjects: what is right and what is wrong? [text 2023]
