The design of this moss-green, velvet evening cape reflects the interest in 16th century fashion at the fin-de siècle. In this period some couturiers were asked to create 'historical' theatre costumes for plays and operas. Designing these costumes inspired couturiers to include 16th century elements in their newest fashion collections. High collars, puffed sleeves and the use of velvet appeared in late 19th century fashion. This beautiful example from the Centraal Museum collection is embellished with a cord of gold thread and green beads.
