The plague struck relentlessly in Utrecht between 1573 and 1576. In those years, around 15 to 20 percent of the population died: 3-4000 victims out of an estimated population of 20,000. This medallion was minted in 1573 to commemorate this terrible epidemic. It shows that even then people sought ways to come to terms with such traumatic experiences.
