Over the past forty years, Han Schuil has created a consistent and idiosyncratic body of work. Although he is among those artists responsible for the strong revival of painting in the Netherlands since the 1980s, he cannot be linked to a specific group or movement, either geographically or in terms of a shared painterly language. In a sense, Schuil doesn’t fit in anywhere and that is what makes him so special. His works are very recognisable, even if some are robust and others are very delicate. [text 2023]
