In the early seventeenth century, Rome was at the centre of the world. From across Europe, young  painters were drawn to the Eternal City where Caravaggio was rumoured to have unleashed a revolution in art, painting unprecedented realism, thrilling drama, grand gestures and mysterious  light.

Artists flocked to see, including Dirck van Baburen, Hendrick ter Brugghen and Gerard van  Honthorst from Utrecht. At the Centraal Museum you can see several of their masterpieces and the impact of Italian art.
