Europeana Fashion
De Europese modedatabase Europeana Fashion wordt mogelijk gemaakt door 21 musea en archieven.
Samen met 21 andere enthousiaste musea en private archieven slaat het Centraal Museum sinds maart 2012 de handen ineen om vorm te geven aan een Europese modedatabase: Europeana Fashion. De eerste vruchten van dit samenwerkingsverband zijn inmiddels te vinden op europeanafashion.eu. Naast kledingstukken, vindt u er tekeningen, modefoto’s, catalogi, websites en blogs.
Mode wordt steeds meer op waarde geschat als een integraal onderdeel van onze cultuur. Een modebeeld weerspiegelt een samenleving op zowel persoonlijk als maatschappelijk vlak, terwijl modeontwerpen tegelijkertijd een onderdeel vormen van het kunstenspectrum. Al vanaf het begin van de 20ste eeuw verzamelen Europese musea om deze redenen kledingstukken en accessoires, waardoor we tegenwoordig kunnen putten uit een rijke internationale collectie van aan mode gerelateerd erfgoed. Europeana fashion brengt het groeiende aantal collecties online samen en maakt deze toegankelijk voor het internationale publiek.

Europeana Fashion en het Centraal Museum
In de mode- en kostuumcollectie nemen 18de-eeuwse zijden robes met bloemmotief een plaats in naast conceptuele mode van Iris van Herpen of Viktor & Rolf. Vanaf de beginjaren maken kostuums deel uit van de verzameling. Sinds 1921 bestond er een voortvarend verzamelbeleid. De kostuumconservator schreef brieven aan adellijke families met de vraag of er nog “oude kleren op zolder” lagen. Door deze inspanningen -en die van haar opvolgers- is vrijwel elk silhouet uit de kostuumgeschiedenis vanaf 1750 terug te vinden in de collectie. Sinds het einde van de jaren 1990 is het verzamelbeleid meer gericht op conceptuele en internationale mode, die bij voorkeur de grenzen van de eigen discipline opzoekt.
Inmiddels bestaat de mode- en kostuumcollectie van het Centraal Museum uit meer dan 10.000 objecten die via Europeana Fashion in een Europese context ontsloten worden. Het gaat niet alleen om modeontwerpen. Ook afbeeldingen van modetentoonstellingen, brochures en modecatalogi worden in Europeana Fashion opgenomen.
