Almost every one of Koch’s still lifes date back to the final years of the Second World War; he traded them for bread, coffee and tobacco. This painting also, which its owner later bequeathed to the Centraal Museum. The composition is sober and colour carefully balanced. Koch paid great attention to execution. He must have been proud of the end-result and signed the Latin word ‘faciebat’ along the bottom edge: “Pijke Koch made this painting in 1944 in Utrecht”.
