Broken Spectre (2022) is a gripping film installation by Richard Mosse that reveals and immerses viewers in the devastating impact of deforestation in the Amazon.

The destruction of the rainforest and the resulting climate change are unfolding in ways that are too vast to comprehend, too small to perceive and too normalised to see. In an attempt to make the invisible and intangible visible, Mosse employs a range of techniques. Using heat-sensitive analogue film affected by the burning forest and hypnotic satellite imagery, he reveals the scale and extent of the destruction.

Accompanied by a haunting soundtrack by Ben Frost, this experimental documentary also reveals the human side of the tragedy. From Indigenous communities fighting for survival to Brazilian cowboys deliberately burning their surroundings to create pasture for cattle destined for the international meat and leather markets.
