Close scrutiny of this underskirt reveals various narrative scenes which are printed on to the cotton material by copper engravings. This red-brown, monochrome design on a light background with the characteristic pattern is known as Toile de Jouy, after a suburb of Paris, Jouy-en-Josas. On the front right of the skirt The Judgement of Paris is portrayed, showing Athene with helmet and spear, the sparsely dressed Aphrodite in seductive pose and Paris with shepherd's staff. Next to this is an image of 'blind-man's-bluff' and two scenes from The Deserted Village, a poem by the Englishman Oliver Goldsmith in 1770. The total circumference of the skirt is 446 cm, which made it a valuable possession. There is space left in the side seams to enable the wearer to keep a purse under the skirt. The blue and white checked lining contrasts considerably with the outer material.
