Robe à la française bestaande uit rok en overjapon
The flat pleats on the back of this dress are sometimes called ‘Watteau pleats’, after the pleated gowns in paintings by the French rococo painter Watteau. The fashion originated in the French court hence these dresses for the elite being dubbed robes à la Française. The skirt is widened with paniers: two ‘baskets’ on the hips that accentuate the narrow waist. The creamy silk is woven with a stripe and multicoloured bouquets. [text 2026]
