Petronella de la Court’s famous doll’s house is a miniature art collection and carries a subtle message: this is what a well-run household should look like. It is a realistic yet idealised representation of patrician house in Amsterdam. This is just one of the ten rooms and a true picture of a seventeenth-century Dutch urban garden with typical features such as evergreen box hedges and an arbour. The four ivory garden statues symbolize the elements of fire, air, water and earth. The flowering and fruiting plants of all
seasons (peach, grape, apple, pear, plum, tulip, crown imperial crown, primrose, carnation, rose, sunflower, iris, lily, lemon and orange trees) are a demonstration of wealth.
